ABOUT SAM BIRRELL
I grew up on a property between Murchison and Toolamba with my mum, dad and three sisters.
Following high school, I began working at a farm in Ardmona and this is where my passion for agriculture began.
After two years of working on local farms, I began an Agricultural Science degree at the University of Melbourne, Dookie campus. Studying locally allowed me to continue to develop local connections and knowledge of our vast variety of agricultural industries.
After graduating I started my 14-year career as an agronomist which included work on local orchards and vineyards, before working for Netafin – a micro irrigation solutions company.
This job took me around the world gaining experience from other regional communities.
I completed the renowned Fairley Leadership program in 2013 and I began volunteering for the then newly formed Committee for Greater Shepparton. I believe the development of the Committee was a great step forward for the region. It aligned with my aspirations for our communities to be front and centre in the mind of decision-makers in Canberra and Melbourne.
Three years later I became the CEO and worked alongside businesses, community, and all levels of government to develop Greater Shepparton into what it is today. It expanded my knowledge of the issues facing our community and what needs to be improved to provide the best outcomes for Nicholls. The six-year stint was also an opportunity for me to grow and develop my leadership skills.
I live in Shepparton with my wife Lisa and two children. I’m a keen runner and whip out my guitar and sing any chance I get.
